This area is rich in sites of historical interest and the Museum of Island Life in Kilmuir provides an excellent insight in to the history and cultural heritage of the island. Portree with its many gift shops and range of amenities is only a 20 minute drive from the house.  Dunvegan Castle and gardens, the Waternish peninsula and the Talisker area are within easy travelling distance and well worth a visit.

...Arts and Crafts

Skye has an ever increasing number of arts and crafts outlets - photographic studios, independent art galleries, potteries, a tannery - where unique creations, inspired by the beauty of the surroundings, can be viewed or purchased. In some studios the craftsperson can be seen at work, creating the distinctive piece of pottery or jewellery or capturing the magic of the light and mood of the landscape in watercolour. Occasionally, workshops are offered. Check the web links page for a selection of arts and crafts studios.

... The Culture

The Trotternish area is a stronghold of Gaelic culture and language.  Here crofters can be seen tending their sheep and Gaelic is spoken by people in the local community.  There are many opportunities throughout the summer to sample our wonderful musical heritage. You will often find organised ceilidhs or live music in local venues.  The Skye Scene Ceilidh with Gaelic song and instrumental music or the open-air performance by the Isle of Skye Pipe Band are both hugely popular with visitors to the island.  For many the highlight of the summer is the Skye Highland Games event in Portree,  which takes place in the first week of August.

... The Wildlife

Skye has an abundance of wildlife for you to look out for during your stay.  Walking in the hills or along the coastline or onboard one of the organised boat trips will provide you with plenty of opportunity to spot birds and marine life.  Sea eagles, golden eagles, minke whales, basking sharks and otters are just some of the wildlife that visitors have enjoyed spotting.  Rubha Hunish, the most northerly point on the Trotternish peninsula, is regarded as one of the best places for whale spotting in the UK.  See the web links page for details on the wildlife boat trips available on the island.
